About your library
The ASLA Report on the Impact of School Libraries on Student Achievement states that school libraries can have a positive impact on student achievement. “A strong library program that is adequately staffed, resourced and funded can lead to higher student achievement regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the adults in the community.”
At Renaissance College we will strive to make the Resource Centre the best it can be as the hub of knowledge management and literacy initiatives.


Our Mission Statement

The staff of the Renaissance College Resource Centre
understand and undertake the responsibilities identified in the
International Federation of Library Associations / UNESCO School Library Manifesto so that our school community can achieve their potential.

We are dedicated to providing and promoting access to an extensive range of print and electronic resources, tools and technologies which will:
  • Support the academic, artistic and recreational needs of the staff, students and broader school community
  • Enhance literature appreciation
  • Encourage our staff and students to be competent users of information so that they may become independent lifelong learners
  • Stimulate a love of reading, learning and inquiry.

Virtual visit
At Renaissance College we are very lucky to have a large Resource Centre fitted out with the latest technologies, furniture and resources. We hope you use this wonderful facility to maximize your learning and enjoyment.

Primary Library
Includes relaxation/quite reading areas, fiction, non-fiction, picture books and reference collection, opac computers, internet access, languages section, circulation desk, work desks and toilets.

Secondary Library
Includes relaxation/quite reading areas, fiction, non-fiction and reference collection, imac computers, Internet access, work desks, individual study carrels, tutorial rooms and toilets.


Role of the Teacher Librarian

Teaching and Learning

The teacher librarian assists students to seek, critically evaluate, synthesize and present information. They help students use a range of resources and technologies. Provide opportunity for students to work in groups, individually or whole class. Collaboratively plan and teach units of work with teachers to develop information literacy.

Literature Promotion
Expose students to a range of genres in print and digital format. Develop strategies to foster a love of reading and literature for leisure. Promote best quality literature and authors reflecting a variety of cultures and themes. Guide students in their reading choices. Use selection tools/ reviewing journals to keep informed about current literature for children and young adults.

Services
Select resources to support the information needs of the school community. Provide a friendly learning environment. Assist clients in the use of the Internet and Intranet. Ensure that the library resource centre is a focal point for student learning. Facilitate access to community resources and information services.


Role of the Library Assistant

Library assistants operate routine library procedures and provide the clerical support needed to maintain the efficient functioning of the information service centre. They:

  • assist members of the school community to access print, audio-visual and electronic services, materials and facilities
  • receive and deal with initial information requests
  • process and prepare resources and materials
  • assist in maintenance of bibliographic records and user records
  • assist in maintenance of facilities, including set-up of displays, shelving resources and operation of security procedures
  • provide clerical support to teacher librarians
