Dear RCHK Family,

I hope that this note finds you and your family well and enjoying the summer holiday! After several continuous days of rain at the end of June the sun has finally pierced through and begun to shine in all its splendor here in Hong Kong. The humidity has also returned with ferocity but it's still a delightful place even in July!

I wanted to share with all the extended RCHK family the stunning IB Diploma results for the Class of 2010 that became available this week. Attached you will see a breakdown of the results in an Overview, Distribution of Results, Core Points and Subject Areas. The highlights of our results are:

1. 98% of RCHK IB Diploma candidates received the Diploma; the world average is 79%.
2. RCHK students met or exceeded the IB world average in 32 of the 33 IB subjects examined.
3. 50% of RCHK students received the Bilingual IB Diploma; the world average is 31%.
4. 40% of RCHK students earned a remarkable 35 points or more; the world average is 22%.
5. RCHK results were at par with the other five Foundation secondary schools.

We will examine the results further once the faculty returns in August. In the meantime, on behalf of the RCHK family I would like to congratulate all 45 scholars in the Class of 2010 as well as their gifted teachers, administrators, and higher education counsellors for the extraordinary success on the IB examinations. It takes a team effort to facilitate teaching and learning for all students to succeed in the International Baccalaureate. If RCHK was a football (soccer) team we'd win the World Cup!

We'll be in touch again later this summer probably about two weeks before classes resume. Enjoy all that the holiday has in store for you and for your family!

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Harry Brown

Principal

Congratulations to the Renaissance College Class of 2010 on their outstanding performance in the recent May IB Diploma examinations. With 98% of our graduates achieveing their Diploma we are very proud of this outstanding achievement. With this, our second IB Diploma cohort, we have built on the success of last year. 91% of our students take the distinguished IB Diploma, so a 98% pass rate is a remarkable achievement and well above the world average pass rate.

Distribution of Results
  No. Awarded School % World % (2009) (1)
Number of Bilingual Diplomas 20 50.0% 31.1
Number of 40+ IB Diplomas 1 2.5% 5.5
Number of 35+ IB Diplomas 16 40.0% 21.7
Number of 30+ IB Diplomas 27 67.5% 50.0

Observations:

We are particularly proud of the fact that 50% of our students were awarded the acclaimed Bilingual Diploma. This underscores the value RCHK places on language learning, and Chinese language learning in particular. The importance of communication, aside from being an intrinsic part of the IB philosophy, is well recognised at RCHK as being a vital aspect of our students' education in preparation for the competitive world of work and in acknowledgement of our location as part of China. We are also very proud that 40% of our students achieved an impressive, and highly competitive score of 35 points or more.

Core Points (Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge)
Score School No. Of Candidates School % World % (2009) (1)
3 7 17.5% 4.5
2 12 30.0% 17.0
1 17 42.5% 44.9
0 4 10.0% 28.6

Observations:

The challenge of the IB Diploma is not necessarily in students success in their individual subjects but in their ability to also be successful with their TOK and EE. An impressive 90% of our students were able to access points from their performance in TOK and EE, and again, well above the world average. NB - It is important to realise that a score of 0 is also a recognised score which qualifies a student for the IB Diploma, as you need to achieve at least 0 to pass the IB Diploma.

Subjects (which includes Higher and Standard Levels)
Number of subjects examined 33
Number of subjects with 6 or more candidates entered 18
Number of subjects more than 0.25 above world average grade (1) 12
Number of subjects in line with world average, within ±0.25 5
Number of subjects more than 0.25 below world average grade 1

Observations:

A testament to our highly qualified and experienced IB Diploma teachers is that virtually all our subject areas are performing at or above the world averages. As with all experienced IB practitioners our faculty will digest these May 2010 results over the coming weeks and months to ensure we continue to provide the very best IB experience for our students.

(1) N.B. World % achieving the diploma are for 2009 as 2010 data is not available until November. Statistics show that these percentages vary very little year on year.
