Dear RCHK Family,

Semester one reports for secondary students have just been released. These reports give parents a comprehensive overview of their children’s academic and social progress in school. After the Chinese New Year break, parents will have the opportunity to discuss their children’s progress at the three-way conferences on February 8 and 9. We strongly encourage parents to review the report with their children, and offer encouragement and celebrate achievements. This will inject positive energy and inspiration into your child’s study.

The first Visual Arts Scholarship Exhibition will be held in the PAC on February 2 and 3. The exhibition will showcase brilliant artwork created by RCHK visual arts scholarship students. Each piece is of exceptional quality across a broad range of subject matter, style and media, including painting, drawing and textile. Please come and support our young and emerging artists!

The weather has been a bit cool and wet lately, and government data indicates that rates of local influenza are on the rise. To avoid the spread of cold and flu, please be vigilant in the maintenance of health and hygiene. For advice and information on flu prevention, please visit the Centre for Heath Protection website at www.chp.gov.hk.

The Chinese New Year holiday will begin next Monday, followed by two teacher professional development days on January 30 and 31. As a result, classes will resume on Wednesday, February 1.

According to Chinese mythology, the dragon is a symbol of strength, power and good luck. As we usher in the Year of the Dragon, I wish all of our RCHK families a happy and healthy new year.

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Harry Brown

Principal

Malawian Students Visit RCHK

Renaissance College has a diverse student population, and this diversity got an extra boost on Jan. 5 when 27 students from Malawi spent a day on campus learning and interacting with RCHK students.

Aki Siah, primary Chinese coodrinator, said that the visit provided an excellent opportunity for RCHK students to learn more about poverty in Africa and "to reflect on their life," as many local students take things for granted.

Besids learning with their RCHK buddies, these Malawian students delighted teachers and studens in their performance of traditional African dance, kung fu and qigong. In addition, they also recited the classical Chinese prose Di Zi Qui (弟子規) in fluent Mandarin.

The Malawian students study Chinese culture and language, as well as kung fu and Buddhism at Yuan Tong College. The college is part of Amitofo Care Centre, a Buddhist orphange in Malawi.

MUN Caucus at Renaissance College
By Nick Georgiou, Humanities Teacher

On Jan. 14, 2012, RCHK hosted a caucus of the Hong Kong Model United Nations (HKMUN) for the first time. HKMUN is the largest MUN Conference in Hong Kong, attended by over 30 local and international schools, with the aim of preparing delegates for the conference itself in February at West Island School by creating resolutions for relevant global issues.

Ten students from RCHK are representing Germany in the Security Council and in the General Assembly committees. There task is a tough one - trying to negotiate and compromise with nations with differing standpoints to create resolutions that will help to go some way towards solving crises such as the ever present and growing instability in Somalia, the situation in Iraq, land mines, and the treatment of domestic migrant workers worldwide.

At the beginning of caucus, delegates of each country presented their position papers, which spelt out their respective governments viewpoint. These positions would form the backdrop for lobbying support from other nations so that resolutions could be formed.

Overall, all participating delegates had a fulfilling time, and feel that the standard of debate at the conference itself is going to be extremely high.

ACAMIS Maths Olympiad 2011
By Jason Cheung, Year 9

Ms. Shobha Sanker supervised a team of four Year 9 students: Jason Cheung, Andy Li, Neo Lung and Caton Yang to participate in the 2011 annual ACAMIS Maths Olympiad held at the Hong Kong Academy. There were four rounds of competition, one was for fun and the rest was real competition.

I found the round titled "One Big Problem" the most difficult one. In this round, each team had to solve a very complicated problem, whereas the most interesting round was "Hands On Activity," which was a non-competitive round. In this activity, all the teams were mixed up. Each team had to construct a structure using only newspaper and tape that was capable of hiding all the team members, such that they were not visible from the outside. Each team was given 15 minutes to plan on a piece of paper and 30 minutes to construct. However, during the construction stage, team members were not allowed to communicate verbally with each other.

At the end our team was ranked second place, only lost to the winner  Chinese International School by a small margin.
