Dear RCHK Family,

The academic year may be drawing to a close, but life on campus is as busy as ever.

Last week, we celebrated Joyful Fruit Day – a government initiative to raise awareness of healthy eating on campus. We had tastings, games and even a fruit fashion parade. Thanks to our NutriAgent team, Chartwells and all of the parents, staff and students who helped make the day a great success.

The Primary Sports Day took place at Ma On Shan Sports Ground on April 30. We had perfect weather, with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The introduction of the house system in the Primary School has been a great success, as evidenced by the dazzling displays of athletic prowess and school spirit.

I was lucky enough to attend the Year 11 production of “The Crucible” this week. This impressive show involved all of our Year 11 arts students, both on stage and behind the scenes. Bravo!

This week, we hosted staff and students from Hangzhou Greentown Yuhua School 杭州綠城育華學校. Our students stayed with Yuhua School families over Easter, so it was great to repay the favour. Our visitors attended a special assembly and spent a day on campus attending classes with their homestay buddies. Thanks to all our families who hosted students, it's great to see this kind of grassroots cultural exchange taking place at RCHK.

Our Year 13 students are currently in the middle of their IB Diploma Exams. This is their final piece of assessment after two years of hard work and intense study. We wish them all the very best!

In the next fortnight we have Secondary exams, the Swimming Carnival and the PYP Exhibition….there is never a dull moment at RCHK!

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Harry Brown

Principal

A Message from Louisa Yen, C&S Coordinator

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Read to Feed programme. This worthy fundraiser helps turn pages into dollars.

Students at RCHK raised $6,475 for the Anhui Dabie Mountain Area Development Project. The money will be used to provide pigs, cattle, chickens and goats to this community in rural China, helping lift local families out of poverty.

Healthy Relationships Workshops
A Message from Nick Cotton, Deputy Head of Secondary

All students in Year 7 to Year 11 will take part in the Healthy Relationships Workshops.

On April 19 and 21 we held information sessions for parents. You will find a selection of useful resources from these sessions on the school website

Managing Exam Stress
A Message from Jackie Greenwood, RCHK Counsellor

This month our Secondary students will be taking their final exams.

For some practical advice on how to support your child during this important period, please check out our parent’s guide to coping with exam stress posted on the College website

SSFHK Track and Field Championships
A Message from Jim Morgan, Track and Field Coach

RCHK had nine representatives at the Track and Field Championships, held at Aberdeen Sports Ground on April 28.

Leah Birkby won three gold medals in the U14 400m, 800m and 1500m. Ryan Nam collected gold in the U14 400m and silver in the U14 800m. Tim Wooton took silver in the U20 High Jump and Juno Sui won silver in the U20 Long Jump.

Our other team members also did themselves proud – well done to Rachel Mazariegos, Brian Cochran, Max Wong, Joanne Lo and Raymond Chou.

Congratulations to the team. Next year, we hope to expand the team and strengthen Track and Field at RCHK.

Gateway Updates – Year 13

Year 13 students should regularly update their university application status on the Gateway website. The FE office will send the final transcripts to your universities for you when required, so the accuracy of your Gateway details is very important!

Congratulations...

Several of our Secondary students have been selected for an U16 Rugby Tour to Guam at the end of May. Only 24 girls are going on the tour, and the tryouts attracted dozens of hopefuls from across Hong Kong. Congratulations to Lily Mae Reid, Daniella Wood, Francesca Wood and Jess Mihan.

Our Black Kites tennis team reached the semi-finals of the K-Swiss Inter-School TennisChampionships at Victoria Park last month. They were among the top four teams of the 32-team event. This was an encouraging result as they were the youngest team of the tournament and it was their first appearance in a major event. Congratulations Lawrence Lo, Cedric Wong, Jeff Chan, and Ji Fung Lam.

Students from RCHK hosted a Famine 12 event with Hong Kong University Graduates Association College, Shatin College and Li Po Chun United World College. Over 100 students gathered at RCHK to experience a 12-hour famine and participate in workshops. The students raised more than HK$50,000 for local charities, and would like to thank Hong Kong Health Check and Medical Diagnostic Group and Health Check Charity Funds for their sponsorship.

Our Year 6 students are very excited about the upcoming PYP Exhibition, held on May 17 – 18.

The Exhibition is an opportunity for our Year 6 students to celebrate their final year of Primary school, and share their work with the College community.

This year our theme is “Sharing the Planet”, and students will look at ways that they can make a difference, from raising awareness about animal cruelty in Hong Kong and working to support refugees, to campaigning for the rights of child labourers and tackling sustainable greening projects at RCHK.

A special Exhibition Café will be held in the PAC on Tuesday, May 18 from 4.30pm – 6.30pm for Year Six parents and invited VIPs.

Year One at Kadoorie Farm
A Message from Mandy Hodgson, Year One Coordinator

On April 28, Year 1 headed to Kadoorie Farm for our Living Things unit.

We saw many interesting things including a fuzzy caterpillar, wild boars and barking deer! This was an excellent place to finish our unit -  we were able to observe the needs of living things and identify our responsibilities so that living things are safe to grow and stay healthy.

Another fun day out for Year 1!

Congratulations...

6CB student Yifan Ding had his poem, 'Standing on the Docks' published in 'New Tales of the South China Sea'. This book is the inaugural anthology of the Hong Kong Young Writers Award, which was judged by renowned local author Nury Vittachi.

5JK student Chris Jung won second place at the recent 62nd Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. The young violinist wowed judges with his expressive rendition of “Variations on a Theme” by Charles Dancia.

Joyful Fruit Day
A Message from Lina Leung, NutriAgent Team

Our Joyful Fruit Day on April 28 was a great success.

Thank you to all the parents, teachers, students and staff who contributed their time and energy .

The College community enjoyed a range of tasty treats, from fruit tarts and pancakes to fruit skewers and jello. Our Year 5 and Year 6 students acted as “Fruit Ambassadors”, and helped serve the snacks. Thank you to Chartwells, who donated a fruit platter to each class before recess.

The games designed and run by the Secondary students were very popular. Special thanks to Ms Ana Chan who coordinated these activities.

Thanks to Ms Kathryn Bignold and the Secondary students who made a series of  eye-catching posters to promote our celebrations.

The highlight of the party was the “Fruit Parade”. We had students dressed as grapes, strawberries, peaches and pears, and all the costumes were handmade, creative and cute!

All primary students are encouraged to bring fruit as a snack to school - remember, every day can be a “Joyful Fruit Day”. Keep up the good work!

The next event is a competition for Year 5 to Year 12 students, who will be asked to create a video clip or a music jingle to promote fruit eating. Details of the competition will be announced shortly.
