Dear RCHK Family,
A week has almost passed since the start of the new academic year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the returning students in making new students feel welcome at RCHK. Also I would like to thank every teacher and staff member for the smooth opening week.
As you may have already known, the World Health Organization has announced the world is moving into the post-pandemic stage of the H1N1 Influenza outbreak. Therefore we will no longer collect your child’s temperature record. Please refer to the information in this newsletter about our new policy respecting the H1N1 flu virus.
I mentioned in the last issue that the first day of school is an exciting affair. This excitement will continue, as there will be many activities awaiting our students. Please check the listing in the newsletter and consider joining the ones that you find interesting.
There is one more thing I would like to share with you. Our IB Diploma students did exceptionally well in 2010. This year it will be a challenge for the current diploma cohort to do the same or even better. With your enthusiasm and hard work, I am confident our diploma students will shine again.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. Harry Brown
Principal

H1N1 Flu Virus Update
A message from Dr. Harry Brown, Principal
The World Health Organization has declared that the H1N1 pandemic is over. Here at RCHK, we will not be continuing our practice of last year requiring students to bring in a daily record of their morning temperature readings. However we will remain on alert in monitoring the health of our students and staff.
The Centre for Health Protection advises the public to stay vigilant and continue practising good hygiene including washing hands particularly after sneezing or coughing; maintaining good ventilation; building up good body immunity by having a balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, and avoiding smoking.
To prevent possible outbreak of respiratory diseases, especially influenza, children with fever and respiratory symptoms are strongly advised not to attend school until 48 hours after the fever has subsided.

The Library and Information Resources Centre Welcomes You!
A message from Andrea Walker, Head of Library and Information Resources
We look forward to opening our doors, both physical and digital to the RCHK community this year. Over the summer we have ushered in some changes and improvements along with many new resources. If you're new to RCHK you may want to check out what we have to offer at our homepage http://bit.ly/ddY4Hr. Also Database collection at http://bit.ly/aEdOmD. You can view the Library catalogue from home.
What's new ?
IB resources in Math, Psychology, Geography and English.
Math collection hand-picked by Mr. Coventry in the Math department - includes exciting mind benders, brain teasers and everything you need to know about the history of numbers.
Integration of Chinese and English Non-Fiction - All English and Chinese non-fiction resources are now shelved sided by side rather than in separate locations. This will allow easier access and better support our bilingual English-Chinese students.
Primary Playaway Collection - an extremely popular item in the Secondary school last year, Playaways are pre-loaded digital audio players, designed to give users simple and immediate access to audiobooks.
Simplified Chinese titles - many exciting new titles
Hot Chinese and English Fiction - come check out the great new reads
Acrylic display shelves - located on shelf bayends to maximize display of new resources.
Volunteers
We have been fortunate to have strong parent volunteer support in the LIRC since the school opened in 2006. Over time people come and go so we welcome and encourage new and existing parents who can share some time to help us this year as well. No experience needed and training provided. Please contact Andrea Walker, Head of LIRC.

"Summer Cool Summer Fun" Community Project
A message from Nathalie Fok, Year 9 student
This summer a group of RCHK students volunteered and participated in the “Summer Cool, Summer Fun” community service project. We taught low income students simple English by playing a series of games with them. At first, we used simple English vocabularies as clues that would lead them to different check points. We also taught them about culture and language through fun games. At the end we concluded this 5-week mission with a water game.
These students were initially shy but through these games, we were able to break the ice and eventually came to know each other better. There is no doubt this past summer vacation was a very meaningful one.
