Performing Arts

The Performing Arts at Renaissance College plays a vital role in developing well-rounded students.

The study of Music and Drama is seen as a necessary part in the developmental process – not an appendix to the life or curriculum offerings of the College. To be fully alive, students must have enrichment in all areas of their lives; academic, physical, spiritual, and the aesthetic.

The Performing Arts education at Renaissance College is primarily concerned with the development of the aesthetic; the development of beauty and wonder in the minds of our students.

Arts education involves inquiry and problem solving skills. It evokes students' appreciation of natural form and design, different cultures, the expression of human society, and the function of the Arts in history; it encourages them to think and be creative.

We recognise that the arts are an individual pursuit and a collaborative endeavour, and we encourage students to appreciate others’ attributes, contributions and skills. Because the arts are interactive and culminate in a performance, they develop students’ social and personal confidence.

In the MYP, Music and Drama classes will concentrate on three broad areas: performing, creating and analysing. Each area is oriented toward the year level and ability of students.

The MYP concentrates more fully on progressively developing students' skills in all three areas, incorporating the five ‘areas of interaction’ as prescribed by the IBO. There will be an increased emphasis on particular skills, for example the use of technology in music, and aspects of comedy in drama. This will occur both individually and in ensembles. Students will be encouraged to explore the works of others throughout history and the relevance of the Arts within their own society, and in a variety of other cultures.
